Nigeria Ebola Case: The 1976 Name's Surprising Origin
Ebola is named after a river, not the village where it was first seen. In 1976, scientists chose not to call it "Yambuku virus", so the community near the Yambuku mission hospital would not be stigmatized.
The Ebola river is about 60 km from Yambuku and was not in the outbreak area. The virus in the news today, Nigeria's imported case confirmed on October 20, 2026, is Bundibugyo virus. It is a different ebolavirus, named after a district in Uganda, and this story does not claim the two events are alike.
