The Real Story of Halloween: Before Candy

Halloween began as Samhain, a night when the dead were thought to walk the earth. In that story, costumes were not for fun. They were disguises, worn to hide from the dead.

That is a long way from candy and trick-or-treating. The one-minute video tells the real story of Halloween, from Samhain to the holiday we know.

Caesar Cipher: The 2,000-Year-Old Trick

Two thousand years ago, a rider carried a letter across enemy territory, knowing that if he was caught, the letter would be read, the plan would die, and so would he. Julius Caesar had a fix for that. He assumed his letters would be caught. So he wrote them in a way that made reading them useless. The trick was almost embarrassingly simple. When Caesar had something confidential to say, he wrote each letter as the letter three places further down the alphabet. A became D. B became E. The Roman writer Suetonius, who read Caesar's private letters, tells us exactly how it worked: to read one, you substitute the fourth letter of the alphabet, D, for A, and so on. So "ATTACK AT DAWN" became "DWWDFN DW GDZQ". To an enemy who intercepted it, the message looked like gibberish in an unknown language. Most people in the ancient world could barely read their own language, let alone spot a pattern in a scrambled one. The letter could be captured, copied, and passed arou...

How Roman-Inspired Concrete Can Heal Small Cracks

Image
A crack looks like the beginning of the end. In some Roman-inspired concrete, it can also start a repair. The clue is a small white inclusion called a lime clast. For years, these features in ancient concrete were often dismissed as signs of poor mixing. A study published in 2023 asked a different question: could they help explain why some Roman structures lasted so long? The white chunks that mattered Researchers examined ancient concrete from Privernum, Italy. Their analysis pointed to hot mixing: using quicklime alongside, or instead of, lime that had already been mixed with water. The resulting lime clasts can provide a reactive source of calcium. When a small crack reaches one of these clasts, water can trigger reactions that fill the gap with calcium carbonate or help strengthen the surrounding material. The process is chemistry, not magic. What the experiment showed The team made modern Roman-inspired samples, deliberately cracked them and ran water through them. MIT...

Who Invented Potato Chips? The Legend Has a Problem

Image
Everyone knows the story. In 1853, at Moon's Lake House in Saratoga Springs, a cook named George Crum answered a complaining customer by slicing potatoes paper-thin and frying them hard. The delighted customer, the legend says, was Cornelius Vanderbilt, and the potato chip was born in a flash of kitchen revenge. It is a great story. It also has a problem. Vanderbilt spent the summer of 1853 touring Europe with his family, which puts a serious hole in the famous restaurant scene. And there is an earlier report. In 1849, four years before the supposed invention, the New York Herald praised a Saratoga cook named Eliza for her potato frying. The report describes her reputation; it does not establish that she invented the chip. But it shows thin fried potatoes were already known in Saratoga before Crum's legendary moment. So what did Crum do? He helped popularize the snack. His "Saratoga chips" became famous, and he later opened his own restaurant. That is di...
